Frequently Asked Questions (7th CPC Salary Calculation)
How is the 7th Pay Commission in-hand salary calculated?
In-Hand Monthly Salary is obtained by deducting statutory cuts (NPS 10%, CGHS health contribution, CGEGIS, and Professional Tax) from the Gross Salary. The Gross Salary includes Basic Pay, Dearness Allowance (DA @ 53%), House Rent Allowance (HRA @ 9%, 18%, or 27%), and Transport Allowance (TA + DA on TA).
What is the current Dearness Allowance (DA) percentage?
As of 2026, the Dearness Allowance approved by the Union Cabinet and adopted by State governments stands at 53% of Basic Pay. DA is revised twice a year (effective January and July) based on the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW).
Which cities qualify for 27% HRA (Class X cities)?
Under 7th CPC guidelines, cities with a population of 50 lakhs and above fall under Class X (27% to 30% HRA). These include Delhi (NCT), Greater Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Pune.
How much pension contribution is deducted under NPS?
For all government servants enrolled in the National Pension System (NPS Tier-1), exactly 10% of (Basic Pay + DA) is deducted from the monthly payroll. The Government contributes 14% of (Basic Pay + DA) directly to the employee's Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN).
