Frequently Asked Questions on Negative Marking
How is 1/3rd negative marking calculated in UPSC and Railways?
Under the 1/3rd scheme, 33.33% of the marks assigned to a single question are deducted for every wrong answer. For example, in UPSC GS Paper-1 where each question carries 2.0 marks, each incorrect answer deducts 0.66 marks. In Railway RRB where each question carries 1.0 mark, each incorrect answer deducts 0.33 marks.
What is the negative marking penalty in SSC CGL and SSC CHSL?
In SSC CGL and CHSL Tier-I, each question carries 2 marks and 0.50 marks are deducted for every wrong answer (equivalent to 1/4th penalty of positive marks). In Tier-II, each question carries 3 marks and 1 mark is deducted per wrong answer (1/3rd penalty).
Which competitive exams have ZERO negative marking?
Notable exams with zero negative marking include TNPSC Group 4 and Group 2 (OMR Prelims), Rajasthan Patwari/CET, Haryana HSSC CET (OMR unattempted bubble rule applies), and various state teaching eligibility tests (CTET, State TETs).
Should I guess answers if there is negative marking?
If you can eliminate at least two options out of four, statistical probability favors answering because the expected value (+0.50 marks average) exceeds the penalty risk. Blind random guessing with 4 unknown options yields a net expected value of 0 and generally reduces your rank.
